Is Koufonisia worth visiting for photography
Koufonisia is tiny, flat and built almost entirely around water, which makes it one of the more rewarding islands in the Cyclades to photograph in a short visit. Nearly everything worth shooting, the harbour village, the beaches and a genuinely unusual natural pool, sits within walking distance of Chora, so you do not lose half your trip to driving between spots the way you would on a larger island.

Best time of day to photograph Koufonisia
Italida Beach is the clear pick for sunset, with Keros sitting out across the water as a natural silhouette once the light starts to fade.
The Pisina natural pool and Gala Beach both work better earlier in the day, when the sun is higher and lights the turquoise water and the surrounding rock more evenly, rather than leaving the cave and rock walls in shadow.
Best season for photography in Koufonisia
May, June and September give you the clearest water and the most comfortable walking conditions, since almost everything on this island is reached on foot.
July and August bring in the most visitors relative to the island’s size, given how small Koufonisia is, along with the meltemi wind, which can add a noticeable chop to the water at more exposed spots like Pori.
Practical photography tips
Leave the car behind. Koufonisia is small and largely flat, and Chora, the Pisina and most of the beaches are within a comfortable walk or short bike ride of each other, so you rarely need to plan around driving here.
Protect your gear near Gala Beach. The cave like setting and the water itself, cloudy with fine limestone particles, are not a natural combination to expose electronics to for long, so keep cameras and phones well away from the spray.
Check current drone rules before you fly. Greece follows the EU’s common drone regulations, which generally require operator registration for anything over 250 grams, and there are no fly zones around the small local airstrip and the harbour. Rules can change, so check the current requirements from Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority before your trip.
