Golden hour: the standard 45 minutes or so before sunset suits Kini and Ano Syros’s upper lanes well, with views back down over Ermoupoli’s rooftops. Ermoupoli’s neoclassical squares photograph well through the day, since the interest is as much in the architecture as the light.

Is Syros worth visiting for photography
Syros is a genuinely different kind of Cycladic island for photography, its capital, Ermoupoli, was once second only to Athens in size and importance in nineteenth century Greece, and it looks like it, grand neoclassical mansions, marble squares and a theatre modelled on Milan’s La Scala, all built on shipping wealth rather than the whitewashed cube houses found elsewhere in the group. Climb the hill above the harbour and Ano Syros switches the style completely, to a medieval Catholic town of narrow stepped lanes built by Venetians to confuse pirate raiders. Between the 2 towns, a working fishing village famous for its sunsets and a stretch of coastline carved with ancient sailors’ inscriptions, Syros has more architectural range than almost any other island in this series.
Best photo spots in Syros
1. Ermoupoli. The Cyclades’s capital and once Greece’s second city, built on nineteenth century shipping wealth into grand neoclassical mansions and marble squares rather than the typical whitewashed Cycladic style. Miaouli Square, paved with Tinos marble in 1868, is dominated by the Town Hall, designed by the architect Ernst Ziller, and the nearby Apollo Theatre, modelled on Milan’s La Scala with a horseshoe shaped auditorium and a frescoed ceiling, is one of the more unusual interiors to photograph on any Cycladic island. 2. Ano Syros. A car free, medieval hilltop town built by Venetian Catholics in the thirteenth century, its narrow stone lanes, archways and stepped passages deliberately laid out to confuse pirate raiders, crowned by the Catholic Cathedral of San Giorgio, with views on a clear day reaching Tinos, Delos, Paros and Naxos. Ano Syros is also the birthplace of Markos Vamvakaris, the founding figure of rebetiko music, whose childhood home is now a small museum. Read more in our Ano Syros village guide.
3. Kini and the Mermaid Monument. A working fishing village on the west coast, still resisting overdevelopment, with fishing boats docking daily and the Panagia Gorgona, or Mermaid Monument, standing at the harbour, described on our site as particularly striking in golden hour light. 4. Agios Stefanos Cave and chapel. A tiny white chapel built inside a coastal cave near Galissas beach, with the sea reaching almost to its steps, said to have been built by a fisherman named Stefanos in gratitude after surviving an octopus attack. 5. Grammata and Gria Spilia coves. A remote, sheltered bay on the northwest coast where sailors carved inscriptions and prayers for safe passage into the rocks from classical antiquity through the Byzantine period, turning the shoreline into what our own site calls an open stone archive. 6. Galissas. A sheltered west coast bay of fine sand shaded by tamarisk trees, settled since at least the eighth century BC and the first part of Syros to develop for tourism, with the hilltop chapel of Agia Pakou looking down over the bay. Read more in our Galissas village guide.
7. Vari. The oldest inhabited village on Syros, with archaeological evidence of habitation dating back to about 4000 BC, a Venetian tower still standing in the village, and a sheltered, south facing bay that stays calm even when the wind picks up elsewhere on the island. Best time of day to photograph Syros
Kini is the clear pick for sunset, with the Mermaid Monument catching the golden hour light at the harbour.
Ano Syros also rewards an evening visit, the upper lanes and the cathedral steps look back down over Ermoupoli’s rooftops and harbour as the light fades.
Ermoupoli’s marble squares and neoclassical buildings photograph well for most of the day, since the architecture itself is the subject rather than a particular direction of light.
Best season for photography in Syros
May, June and September give you the clearest light and calmer seas for a boat trip out to Grammata, which is largely a fair weather excursion.
July and August bring the strongest light and the busiest harbours at Ermoupoli and Kini, along with the meltemi wind, which is worth checking against your plans if a boat trip to Grammata is the priority shot.
Practical photography tips
Time Kini around sunset properly. The harbour gets busy as the light show approaches, so arrive with time to find your spot before the crowd does.
Wear proper footwear for Ano Syros. The stepped stone lanes are beautiful to photograph but can be steep and slippery when worn smooth, so trainers or hiking shoes are worth the extra weight in your bag.
Book Grammata as a fair weather trip. It is reached mainly by boat from Ermoupoli or Finikas, so confirm sailing conditions with the operator rather than assuming the trip will run.
Check current drone rules before you fly. Greece follows the EU’s common drone regulations, which generally require operator registration for anything over 250 grams, and there are no fly zones around the port and airport at Ermoupoli. Rules can change, so check the current requirements from Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority before your trip.
