The best areas to stay in Syros

Ermoupoli

Ermoupoli is the best base for most visitors to Syros and one of the most remarkable towns in the whole of Greece. Built in the 19th century when Syros was the country’s leading port, it is a grand town of marble squares, neoclassical mansions, an opera house modelled on La Scala in Milan, and a scale and elegance you do not find anywhere else in the Cyclades. Staying here means being at the centre of a real, working Greek town rather than a resort, and that is exactly the appeal of Syros.

Ermoupoli is the ferry port, the bus hub and the cultural and dining centre of the island, which makes it the most practical base as well as the most beautiful. When to visit and booking tips

Syros is different from the other Cyclades in that it is a year-round island, so it does not empty out completely in the off season the way the resort islands do. June and September are the best months for most visitors, with warm weather and the beaches at their best.
