The port and how the island is laid out
Syros has one main port, right in Ermoupoli on the east coast. This is the busiest port in the whole Cyclades, because Syros is the administrative capital, so ferries call here often. Villages on the map
Syros has a character all of its own. Ermoupoli, the capital, is a grand nineteenth century town of marble squares, mansions and a famous opera house, unlike anywhere else in the Cyclades. Rising on the hill above it is Ano Syros, the medieval Catholic village of stepped white lanes. Beaches on the map
Syros has a good spread of beaches, mostly down the west and south coasts, and the map is the easiest way to find them. On the west coast, Galissas is one of the longest and most popular, with Kini and Delphini nearby, both good for sunset. Near Ermoupoli, Asteria is the handiest town beach.

Things to do on the map
The great sight of Syros is Ermoupoli itself, with its marble main square, the grand town hall and the Apollon Theatre, a small copy of La Scala in Milan. Above it, the climb up to Ano Syros leads through stepped lanes to a Catholic cathedral with wide views.
