Is Sifnos worth visiting for photography
Sifnos was one of the wealthiest islands in the Cyclades in antiquity, rich enough from gold and silver mining to fund one of the treasuries at Delphi, and that long history has left behind a genuinely photogenic mix, a monastery built on its own rocky islet, a fortified former capital with a marble wall found nowhere else in the Cyclades, and pottery workshops still working in the same villages their families have used for generations. It is a quieter island than Santorini or Mykonos, but a genuinely rewarding one for anyone looking for less familiar subjects.
Best photo spots in Sifnos
1. Chrysopigi Monastery. A whitewashed monastery built on a rocky outcrop just off the coast near Faros, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of rock, with open sea on both sides and widely regarded as one of the most photographed spots on the island. 2. Kastro. Sifnos’s capital for more than 2,000 years until 1836, built directly above sea cliffs with sweeping views down onto the water, and home to the only surviving Sifnian marble wall from the sixth century BC found anywhere in the Cyclades. The village itself was fortified around 1635 under Venetian rule, with 2 concentric rings of houses and arched gateways still forming the main entrances today. Read more in our Kastro village guide.
3. Profitis Ilias Monastery. Sitting at 682 metres, the highest point on Sifnos, this monastery offers 360 degree panoramic views across the whole island and out to sea. We do not yet have a dedicated page for this spot.
4. Kamares. The island’s main port on the west coast, with a lighthouse built in 1896 and a pier dating to 1909 still in use in the working harbour, alongside the Apostolidis family pottery workshop, running since 1800. Read more in our Kamares village guide.
5. Artemonas. A quieter, more elegant counterpart to Apollonia, built on wealth from the nineteenth century shipping industry, with grand neoclassical mansions and 2 well preserved windmills on the village’s highest hill giving views across the Aegean. Read more in our Artemonas village guide.
6. Vathi. A deep, sheltered bay on the southwest coast surrounded by hills, one of the safest natural anchorages on the island, with sailboats at anchor, a tree lined shoreline and the Atsonios pottery workshop, active for nearly a century, still producing the traditional flaros chimney tops seen on Sifnian rooftops. 7. Cheronissos. A remote fishing village on the island’s northern tip, reached by a winding mountain road, with whitewashed houses and coloured fishing boats around a small harbour, and a white church above the beach looking down over the whole inlet. See our guide to Cheronissos Beach.
Best time of day to photograph Sifnos
Chrysopigi Monastery is the clear pick for sunset, with the whitewashed walls catching the last light and open sea on both sides of the rock.
Kastro also works well in the same window, looking out from the old fortified walls over the sea cliffs as the light fades.
Cheronissos is best photographed in early morning or golden hour light, when the white houses and fishing boats in the small harbour are at their most colourful, and the village is at its quietest after the drive or walk in.
Best season for photography in Sifnos
May, June and September give you the clearest light and the most comfortable conditions for the coastal walk between Faros, Chrysopigi and Apokofto beach.
July and August bring the strongest light and busier villages, along with the meltemi wind, which is worth planning around if you are shooting anything on the exposed coastal path near Chrysopigi or the high viewpoint at Profitis Ilias.
Practical photography tips
Time your visit to Chrysopigi around the light. The monastery faces open sea on both sides, so early morning and the hour before sunset both give strong, even light on the whitewashed walls.
Wear proper footwear for the coastal path. The walk from Faros to Chrysopigi and on to Apokofto beach crosses uneven rock in places, so trainers or hiking shoes are worth the extra weight in your bag.
Allow extra time to reach Cheronissos. The mountain road is winding, and the walk down from the bus stop takes 10 to 15 minutes on a steep, cliff side path, so build this into your schedule rather than treating it as a quick stop.
Check current drone rules before you fly. Greece follows the EU’s common drone regulations, which generally require operator registration for anything over 250 grams, and there are no fly zones around ports and religious sites such as Chrysopigi and Profitis Ilias. Rules can change, so check the current requirements from Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority before your trip.
