The port and how the island is laid out
Sifnos has one port, at Kamares, a sheltered bay on the west coast with a sandy beach of its own. This is where the ferries arrive, and most people head straight up from here to the inland villages. To plan your arrival, see how to get to Sifnos.
The heart of the island sits inland, up a short climb from the port. Apollonia, the capital, and neighbouring Artemonas run together across the hills, and from them roads and old footpaths spread out to the coast. Villages on the map
Sifnos has some of the prettiest villages in the Cyclades, and they cluster inland. Apollonia, the capital, is a lively hill town of white lanes, shops and tavernas, joined to elegant Artemonas with its neoclassical mansions. On the east coast, Kastro is the medieval former capital, a walled village perched above the sea and one of the most atmospheric spots on the island. Beaches on the map
Sifnos has a good spread of beaches around its coast, and the map shows how they sit. The port beach at Kamares is handy and sandy. On the south coast, Platis Gialos is a long Blue Flag beach, and the sheltered bay of Vathi has calm, shallow water good for families. Near the pretty village of Faros are the quiet coves of Faros beach and Glyfos, Fassolou and Vlichos, with Apokofto below its clifftop monastery.

Things to do on the map
Sifnos is one of the best walking islands in the Cyclades, with a large network of waymarked stone footpaths linking the villages, the beaches and the monasteries. The highest point is the Profitis Ilias Monastery, a hilltop monastery with 360 degree views over the whole island, a classic hike.
