Is Imerovigli worth visiting

Skaros Rock and its lost fortress

Below Imerovigli, a rugged volcanic promontory called Skaros Rock juts out into the caldera on three sides. The Byzantines built a fortress here in the 13th century, later strengthened by the Venetians, and for around 600 years it was never taken by force thanks to its sheer cliffs and elevated position. At its height, roughly 200 homes, workshops and churches were packed onto the rock. Its importance faded after the Ottomans took the island in 1566, and a series of volcanic eruptions in the 18th century finally led the remaining residents to abandon it for Imerovigli itself. Today a steep staircase starting near the centre of the village leads out to the rock, with the trail turning from concrete steps into a rougher gravel path as it nears the tip.

From Fira: Imerovigli is about 3 kilometres away, around 10 minutes by taxi or car. On foot, the caldera rim path covers around 2.5 kilometres and takes about 45 minutes.

Imerovigli sits directly on the caldera cliff and has no beach of its own. The nearest options are the same as from Fira: Kamari Beach, about 9 kilometres away, and Perissa Beach, a little further, both on the island’s black sand coast.

Best time to visit

Sunset is the reason most people come to Imerovigli, and it is worth timing a visit for late afternoon regardless of season. July and August are busiest for restaurant bookings, so reserving a terrace table in advance matters more here than in most other villages.
