Fira Santorini

Is Fira worth visiting

Fira is where most people picture themselves the moment they book a trip to Santorini, and it earns that reputation honestly. White cube houses and blue domed churches line the top of a cliff that drops 300 metres or more straight into the caldera, with the volcanic islets and the open sea beyond. The cable car and the climb it replaced

Before 1982, reaching Fira from the old port meant climbing around 600 steep steps on foot or by mule, both still options today for anyone who wants the experience rather than the view from the cabin. The cable car was funded by the Loula and Evangelos Nomikos Foundation, built between 1980 and 1982, and remains the quickest way to move between the water and the town, rising the full 220 metres in about 3 minutes.

Best time to visit

July and August bring the heaviest crowds, particularly around midday when cruise ship visitors are in town. Late afternoon and evening are quieter even in peak season, once the day trip groups have left.
