Is Oia worth visiting
Oia is Santorini’s single most photographed village, and while that reputation brings genuine crowds, especially around sunset, it earns the attention. Cave houses and neoclassical captain’s mansions from the island’s nineteenth century shipping wealth are built directly into the caldera cliff, blue domed churches punctuate the skyline, and the ruined Castle of Oia at the village’s western edge remains one of the best places in Greece to watch the sun go down.
Highlights
The Castle of Oia, also called the Castle of Agios Nikolaos, built by Venetian rulers in the fifteenth century and largely ruined by the 1956 earthquake. What remains, the old watchtower and fragments of the walls, sits right on the caldera rim and is Oia’s best known sunset spot, best visited early rather than at peak sunset time in July and August, when it gets genuinely crowded.
Cave houses and captain’s mansions, neoclassical buildings carved into the volcanic rock during Oia’s nineteenth century years as a wealthy maritime village, many now converted into boutique hotels and galleries and counted among the most photographed buildings in Greece.
The blue domed churches scattered through the village, including Panagia Platsani in the main square and the Church of Anastasis, both instantly recognisable examples of the Cycladic style.
The Naval Maritime Museum, housed in a restored Oia mansion, with ship models, navigational instruments, figureheads and old photographs documenting the village’s seafaring history. Check current opening hours and admission before visiting.
Ammoudi Bay, Oia’s old fishing port, reached down several hundred steps cut into the red caldera cliffs below the village, still a working harbour with fishing boats and a handful of seafront tavernas, Katina Fish Taverna among the best known.
Getting there
Oia is about 11 kilometres from Fira. The KTEL bus service runs regularly in summer, roughly every 30 minutes, and takes about 25 minutes, see the Santorini bus timetable. By car or scooter the drive takes about 20 minutes, though parking in the village fills up by mid morning in peak season, and Santorini taxi is a straightforward alternative. Where to eat
Oia is priced at the higher end of the island, and sunset tables in the village itself are worth booking well ahead. Down at Ammoudi Bay, Katina Fish Taverna is the best known of the harbourside spots, serving the day’s catch grilled over charcoal with tables right on the water.
Where to stay
Many of Oia’s cave houses and former captain’s mansions have been converted into boutique hotels and suites, often the reason people choose to stay in the village itself rather than day trip in for sunset. Expect a premium over other parts of the island, reflecting both the setting and the demand.
Nearby beaches
Oia has no sandy beach of its own, but Ammoudi Bay, reached via the steps below the village, is the closest spot for a swim, with clear water and rocks used for cliff jumping a short walk further along the coast at Armonia Bay.
Best time to visit
May, June, September and October give the most comfortable weather and noticeably fewer crowds than midsummer, with September in particular known for especially good sunset light. July and August are Oia’s busiest months by a wide margin, if visiting then, aim for early morning or after the evening crowds have thinned rather than the sunset hour itself.
