Amorgos is one of the most rugged islands in the Cyclades, and its coastline reflects that. Steep cliffs drop into deep blue water, rocky coves hide between headlands, and the beaches here feel genuinely remote. This is the island where Luc Besson filmed The Big Blue, and the water really does look like that.
Most of the beaches on Amorgos sit along the north coast, spread between the 2 main ports of Katapola and Aegiali. The south coast is mostly sheer cliff, so swimming spots there are rare and harder to reach. A few beaches are walkable from the villages. Others need a car, a boat, or a good pair of walking shoes on one of the island’s ancient footpaths.

Families with small children: Maltezi Beach near Katapola has shallow, calm water and is easy to get to on foot.

Amorgos does not have the wide, organised beach strips you will find on Naxos or Paros. That is part of the appeal. The beaches here are smaller, wilder, and often require a bit of effort to reach.
