Mykonos is known as the Island of the Winds and stands as Greece’s most glamorous Aegean destination. The island blends iconic whitewashed Cycladic architecture with turquoise beaches and a cosmopolitan atmosphere that attracts luxury travellers, party enthusiasts, and international visitors from around the world. Located in the northern Cyclades just 2 kilometres from the ancient archaeological site of Delos, Mykonos covers 85.5 square kilometres and supports a permanent population of around 10,700 residents.
The island has become famous primarily for its nightlife, upscale beach clubs, and glamorous reputation rather than its beaches alone. However Mykonos truly offers something for everyone with more than 25 beautiful beaches including legendary spots like Paradise and Super Paradise which feature world-class beach clubs and attract top international DJs. Beyond the party scene visitors can explore the charming labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets in Mykonos Town discovering boutiques, traditional tavernas, and the picturesque Little Venice waterfront district.
Tourism drives the island’s economy accounting for over 90 percent of local gross domestic product and employing more than 70 percent of the workforce. In 2024 the island welcomed approximately 2.2 million visitors with the vast majority arriving during the peak summer season. During July and August up to 80,000 people occupy the island daily creating a visitor to resident ratio of nearly 7 to 1. Despite its small size the island manages to accommodate this massive influx through a well developed infrastructure of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, and tour operators. The Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild winters makes Mykonos an ideal destination from June through September when water temperatures are perfect for swimming and the island experiences 335 to 375 hours of monthly sunshine.
