Here is what each month actually feels like on the island, how warm the sea is, how windy it gets, what is open and what to pack.
Mykonos Weather in January
January is the coldest and wettest month in Mykonos, with daytime highs around 15°C, nights of about 11°C and roughly 10 rainy days. It rarely gets truly cold, and the coldest night recorded at the island’s weather station in recent years was just above 1°C, but damp air and steady northerly winds make it feel chillier than the numbers suggest. Almost every beach club, bar and most hotels are closed, although Mykonos Town keeps a small number of cafés, bakeries and tavernas open for locals. It is a peaceful month for walking the empty lanes of Little Venice, but not for a beach holiday.

Mykonos Weather in February
February is very similar to January, with highs of about 15°C, around 8 rainy days and some of the strongest winter winds. Gales can occasionally disrupt ferries to and from Piraeus and Rafina, so keep your plans flexible. Afternoons get noticeably longer through the month, and carnival celebrations in the weeks before Lent add a little life to the town.

Mykonos Weather in March
March is the start of spring. Highs rise to about 16°C, rain becomes less frequent and the hillsides turn green with wildflowers, which makes it a lovely month for walking inland around Ano Mera. The sea is at its coldest in March, at just under 16°C. Winds can still be sharp and evenings cool. From the last Sunday of March the clocks go forward and sunset moves to about 19:35. Clean Monday, the start of Greek Orthodox Lent, is a public holiday marked with kite flying and falls on 15 March in 2027.

Mykonos Weather in April
April is mild and fresh, with highs around 19°C, about 5 rainy days and 8.5 hours of sunshine. It is a great month for sightseeing, photography and a day trip to Delos before the summer crowds arrive. The sea is still only about 16°C, so it is too cold for most swimmers, and you will want a jumper once the sun goes down. Hotels, restaurants and shops reopen gradually through the month, and the first cruise ships of the season arrive. Greek Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May in 2027, so April 2027 will be the build up to the biggest celebration of the year.
Pack: T shirts and light trousers for the day, a jumper and a light jacket for the evenings, and sunglasses.
Mykonos Weather in May
May is one of the most pleasant months to visit Mykonos. Highs average 23°C, rain is rare and the wind is usually at its calmest of the year. The sea warms from about 17°C to 20°C during the month, so the second half of May is when most people take their first swim. Nearly everything is open by the middle of the month, prices are well below summer levels and the beaches are comfortable rather than packed. Some of the big beach clubs only open fully towards the end of May.

Mykonos Weather in June
June brings proper summer weather, with highs of 26°C, warm nights around 22°C and almost no rain. The sea reaches about 22°C, which is comfortable for swimming, and the days are the longest of the year, with sunset at around 20:40. The Meltemi often starts in June, but usually in gentler spells than in July and August, so boat trips and the crossing to Delos tend to run smoothly. The island gets steadily busier through the month, and beach clubs and nightlife are in full swing by the end of June.

Mykonos Weather in July
July is hot, dry and very busy. The station average is 28°C by day, but temperatures in the mid 30s are common in heatwaves and the highest reading in recent years was 37.8°C. Nights stay warm at around 24°C, so air conditioning makes a real difference to sleep. The Meltemi blows for much of the month, averaging about 28 km/h with stronger gusts, which keeps the heat bearable but turns the north facing beaches rough. The sea is a lovely 24°C.
Pack: the lightest clothes you own, a hat, high factor sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and sandals that will not blow away.
Mykonos Weather in August
August is the windiest and busiest month on the island. Highs average 28°C with warm 24°C nights, the sea is at its warmest at about 25°C, and there is virtually no rain. The Meltemi is at its strongest, averaging about 29 km/h and sometimes blowing day and night for 3 to 5 days in a row. On those days the south coast beaches are the place to be. Around the 15 August Assumption holiday the island is at its fullest, and accommodation, ferries and car hire need booking months ahead.

Mykonos Weather in September
September is many people’s favourite month in Mykonos. Highs ease to about 26°C, the Meltemi gradually weakens, and the sea is still around 23°C after a summer of warming, which makes swimming excellent. The first half of the month still has plenty of nightlife, while the second half is noticeably calmer. Rain is unlikely, although a short autumn shower can arrive late in the month.

October is warm but more changeable. Highs average 22°C, and early October can still feel like summer, while the last week is cooler with more cloud. There are usually about 5 rainy days, most in the second half. The sea stays around 21°C, often warmer than the air in the evening, so swimming is still pleasant on calm, sunny days. Beach clubs, many bars and some hotels close during the month, and ferry timetables begin to thin out. The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, bringing sunset forward to about 17:35.

November is mild but unsettled, with highs around 19°C, about 6 rainy days and short afternoons that end with sunset around 17:05. The sea is still about 18°C. Most of the tourist businesses close for winter and the island returns to local life, so it suits travellers looking for quiet walks and empty lanes rather than beaches.

Mykonos Weather in December
December is cool, wet and windy, with highs of 16°C, about 10 rainy days and the shortest days of the year. Mykonos Town puts up Christmas decorations and a few cafés and tavernas stay open, but most hotels and restaurants are closed until spring. Ferry connections are limited and can be disrupted by winter gales, so build in a spare day.

Why Mykonos Is So Windy: the Meltemi
Mykonos is often called the island of the winds, and for good reason. It sits in the middle of the Aegean with no higher land to the north to shelter it, so it takes the full force of the Meltemi, a strong, dry northerly wind caused by high pressure over the Balkans meeting low pressure over Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean. The Meltemi usually starts in June, peaks in July and August and fades during September. It is typically strongest in the afternoon and often eases a little after sunset, but in August it can blow day and night for several days.
The wind is the reason Mykonos rarely feels as hot as the thermometer suggests, and the reason the island has its famous windmills. It also means the sun feels gentler than it is, so sunburn is common on breezy days. On the beach, wind direction matters more than anything else. When the Meltemi blows from the north, the south coast beaches such as Ornos, Psarou, Platis Gialos, Paraga and Kalo Livadi stay calm and sheltered, while north coast beaches such as Agios Sostis and Fokos get big waves and blowing sand. Large conventional ferries rarely stop running, but fast catamarans and the small boats to Delos can be delayed or cancelled on the windiest days. If you are planning a ferry to Delos or an island hopping connection, keep a spare day before your flight home.

Weather for Activities
Beach days
Reliable beach weather runs from June to September, with late May and early October also good on calm days. The deciding factor is the wind rather than the temperature: on a Meltemi day, choose a south coast beach and you will have calm, clear water while the north coast is whipped by waves.
Swimming
The swimming season runs from late May to October. The sea is about 19°C in May, 22°C in June, 24°C in July, peaks at 25°C in August and stays around 23°C in September. Even in October it averages about 21°C, which many people find warmer than the sea in June.
Hiking and walking
April, May and October are the best months for walking, with highs of 19 to 23°C. In July and August start before 08:00, carry plenty of water and remember there is very little shade away from the villages. Ano Mera and the quiet east of the island are good starting points.
Boat trips and Delos
May, June and September usually have the calmest seas for boat trips and the short crossing to the archaeological site of Delos. In July and August the Meltemi can make the open water rough, and boats to Delos are sometimes cancelled on the windiest mornings, so it is worth planning your visit early in your stay.
Sightseeing and photography
May, September and October are the most comfortable months for exploring Mykonos Town and Little Venice. Early mornings and the hour before sunset give the softest light, and the windmills look their most dramatic against a clear sky on a windy day.
