Best Villages in Folegandros, Greece

Folegandros has just 3 settlements and each one feels like a different island. The main town, Chora, is one of the most dramatic village settings in the entire Cyclades, perched on the edge of a 200 metre cliff with views across the open sea. It is small enough to walk from end to end in 10 minutes, yet it packs in whitewashed lanes, a medieval Kastro quarter, a hilltop church, and enough tavernas to eat somewhere different every night for a week.

The island is quiet, undeveloped, and proud of it. There are no large hotels, no crowds spilling off cruise ships, and no chain restaurants. Visitors come to Folegandros specifically because it has stayed this way. The population is small, the villages are compact, and the pace of life runs on a different clock to Mykonos or Santorini.

Ferries dock at Karavostasis on the east coast, and a bus connects the port to Chora and Ano Meria throughout the day during summer. Check the Folegandros bus timetable for the schedule and the how to get to Folegandros page for ferry connections.

Which Folegandros Village Suits You

The clifftop capital everyone talks about: Chora is the heart of Folegandros and one of the most beautiful small towns in the Greek islands. The Kastro quarter dates back to the 13th century, built as a fortress with houses forming the outer walls and a single narrow entrance. Beyond the Kastro, the main square of Pounta is lined with tavernas under trees, and the path up to the Church of Panagia on the clifftop above is one of the great short walks in the Cyclades. Chora has no beach access directly below, but it is where most visitors stay and eat.

The quiet port village: Karavostasis is where ferries arrive. It is a tiny settlement with a handful of rooms, a couple of tavernas, and a narrow pebbly beach next to the harbour. Some visitors prefer to stay here for the proximity to the water, but most head up to Chora within an hour of arriving.

A farming village at the end of the road: Ano Meria stretches along the ridge at the western end of the island. It is not one compact settlement but a scattered collection of farmhouses, small churches, and stone walls. The pace here is genuinely slow. A couple of traditional tavernas serve matsata (handmade pasta with rooster) and other Folegandros specialities. Walking paths lead down from Ano Meria to several of the island’s best south coast beaches.

Planning Your Village Visits on Folegandros

Folegandros is small enough that you can see all 3 settlements in a single day, though Chora deserves at least a full evening to appreciate properly.
