Best Beaches in Folegandros, Greece

Folegandros is one of the smallest and wildest islands in the Cyclades, and its beaches match that character. There are no long sandy strips here, no beach clubs, and no sunbed operators shouting at you from the shore. What you get instead are small, dramatic coves tucked into the base of steep cliffs, reached by footpath, dirt track, or boat. The water is some of the clearest in the Aegean, and on most beaches you will share the sand with only a handful of other people.

The island has 3 settlements. Chora is the clifftop capital, one of the most striking villages in the Cyclades, perched high above the sea with no beach access directly below. Karavostasis is the small port on the east coast where ferries dock, with a narrow pebbly beach right next to the harbour. Ano Meria is a scattered farming village at the western end of the island, and several of the best beaches lie below it on the south coast.

Folegandros is a small island and the road network is limited. A bus runs between Karavostasis, Chora, and Ano Meria during summer, but reaching the beaches themselves usually means walking down from the road. Some coves are only accessible by small boat from Karavostasis. Check the Folegandros bus timetable for the summer schedule and the how to get to Folegandros page for ferry connections from Santorini, Milos, and Piraeus.

Which Folegandros Beach Suits You

The beach you can only reach by boat: Katergo Beach is the most famous beach on Folegandros. A stunning cove of white pebbles and turquoise water backed by towering cliffs, completely inaccessible by road. Small boats run from Karavostasis during summer, and the 10 minute ride is part of the experience. There are no facilities at all, so bring everything you need. The swimming here is outstanding.

The main beach with tavernas: Agali Beach on the south coast is the closest thing Folegandros has to an organised beach. A sandy bay with a couple of tavernas right on the shore, sunbed hire in summer, and calm water sheltered from the meltemi. It is reached by a path down from the main road or by boat from Karavostasis. Most visitors end up here at least once.

Something wilder beyond Agali: Livadaki Beach is a short walk along the cliff path west from Agali. The path is not difficult but it is exposed, so wear proper shoes. The beach itself is a remote pebbly cove with deep, clear water and no facilities. The walk back up feels longer than the walk down.

A tiny hidden cove: Ambeli Beach sits between Agali and Livadaki, reached by a side path off the main coastal trail. It is very small, easy to miss if you do not know where to look, and completely empty most of the time.

Near the port for a quick swim: Vardia Beach is a short walk south from Karavostasis. It is not the prettiest beach on the island but it is the easiest to reach if you are waiting for a ferry or have just arrived.

Accessible from Ano Meria: Several small coves sit below Ano Meria on the northwest coast, including Ampelos and Livadi. These are reached by steep paths and are the most remote swimming spots on the island. Ask locally for conditions before heading down, because the meltemi wind can make the north coast rough.

Planning Your Beach Days on Folegandros

Folegandros is not a car island in the way that Naxos or Paros are. The roads are few, the beaches are reached on foot, and the boat service from Karavostasis is the most practical way to reach Katergo and some of the south coast coves. The Folegandros taxi page has numbers for the small handful of taxis on the island, but booking ahead is wise because availability is limited.

The Folegandros map shows the walking paths to each beach. Folegandros is above all a walking island, and the trails between Chora, Ano Meria, and the coastal coves are some of the most scenic in the Cyclades. Bring good shoes, water, and sun protection.
