Mykonos Airport

Mykonos Airport, code JMK, is one of the closest airports to a main town anywhere in the Greek islands. The runway sits just behind Mykonos Town, and on a good day you can be sitting in Little Venice about 20 minutes after landing. The catch is that the island only has around 30 to 35 taxis, so getting away from the terminal in July and August takes a bit of planning. This guide covers everything you need to know about Mykonos Airport, including the bus timetable, taxi fares, transfers, car hire, flights from the UK, arrivals, departures and how to get to the ferry port.

Does Mykonos Have an Airport?

Yes. Mykonos has its own airport with flights all year from Athens and direct international flights from spring to autumn. It opened in 1971 and handled 1,613,638 passengers in 2024, which makes it one of the busiest island airports in the Cyclades after Santorini. Since 11 April 2017 it has been run by Fraport Greece, which modernised the terminal as part of a programme across 14 Greek regional airports.

The airport has a single runway of 1,903 metres, shorter than Santorini’s, which is long enough for the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 jets that most airlines use on flights from the UK. Because it is so close to town, planes fly in low over the island, and the view of the windmills and white houses on the approach is one of the best welcomes in Greece.

Mykonos Airport Code and Name

The Mykonos airport code is JMK, and this is what you will see on your boarding pass and luggage tag. The four letter ICAO code used by pilots and air traffic control is LGMK. Booking sites list the airport under several names, including Mykonos International Airport, Mykonos Island National Airport and Manto Mavrogenous Airport. The last one honours Manto Mavrogenous, a woman from a wealthy Mykonos family who spent her fortune funding ships and fighters in the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s. Her statue stands in the main square in town, next to the taxi rank.

Where Is Mykonos Airport?

The airport is on the south west side of the island, on the edge of Mykonos Town and only a short drive from the south coast beaches. Nowhere on Mykonos is far from the terminal, but summer traffic on the narrow roads around town can turn a 10 minute trip into 30 minutes, especially in the early evening.

Mykonos Airport Bus to Town

The KTEL Mykonos bus runs between the airport and Fabrika, the main bus station at the southern edge of Mykonos Town, about a 5 minute walk from the centre and the windmills. The stop is right outside the Arrivals exit, and the ride takes about 10 minutes when the roads are clear. Most bus fares on Mykonos cost between 1.50 and 2.50 euros, so expect to pay about 2 euros. Pay the driver in cash, or buy a ticket online from KTEL Mykonos before you travel. Big bags go in the hold under the bus at no extra cost.

From Fabrika you can change onto buses to Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Platis Gialos, Paradise, Paraga and Super Paradise. These are the departures on the official KTEL Mykonos summer timetable, valid from 11 May 2026 for the Fabrika route and from 29 June 2026 for the New Port route.

Plan around the gaps. The first bus leaves the airport at 09:15 and the last at 22:15, so early morning and late night arrivals will need a taxi or a transfer. The timetable changes at the start and end of the season, and from November to March there are only a few buses a day. Our full Mykonos bus timetable covers every route on the island.

Mykonos Airport Taxi

The taxi rank is on the forecourt outside Arrivals. Mykonos taxis are not expensive by island standards, but there are only about 30 to 35 of them for the whole island, and in August a wait of 30 to 60 minutes at the airport rank is not unusual. At quieter times of year you will usually find a car straight away.

Taxis on Mykonos run on the meter, with a 4 euro charge added to every ride that starts at the airport. Expect around 17 to 25 euros to Mykonos Town, 10 to 15 euros plus the airport charge to Ornos, and 20 to 35 euros to the beaches further east. You can call the radio taxi office on +30 22890 23700 or +30 22890 22400 to book a car, but in peak season they are often fully booked. Uber works on Mykonos only as a way of booking the same licensed taxis, so it does not add any extra cars at busy times. Our Mykonos taxi guide has more fares and tips.

Mykonos Airport Transfers

Because taxis are so scarce, a pre booked transfer is the most reliable way to leave Mykonos Airport between June and September. The driver meets you in Arrivals with a name sign, takes you straight to your hotel or villa for a price agreed in advance, and waits if your flight is late. Minibuses are available for groups, which often works out cheaper per person than 2 taxis. Many hotels, especially around Ornos, Platis Gialos and Agios Ioannis, include or offer their own airport transfer, so ask when you book your room.

Car Hire at Mykonos Airport

Car hire companies have desks at Mykonos Airport or will meet you on the forecourt with your car. A car or quad bike is worth having if you are staying in a villa or want to explore the quieter north and east coast beaches, such as Fokos, Agios Sostis and Kalafatis. It is much less useful if you are staying in Mykonos Town, as cars cannot enter the old town and parking on the edge fills up fast in summer. Book early for July and August, when cars sell out.

UK visitors can drive in Greece on a UK photocard licence. There is a small free car park beside the terminal for pick ups and drop offs. For more on driving, buses and boats around the island, see our guide to getting around Mykonos.

Flights to Mykonos Airport

Mykonos has flights all year from Athens with Aegean Airlines and Sky Express, and the flight takes about 40 minutes. In summer there are also flights from Thessaloniki. From spring to autumn the airport has direct flights to around 48 airports in 19 countries, including 4 in the UK. The direct flight from London takes about 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours.

UK routes are mainly seasonal and run most often from May to October. There are currently no direct flights from Ireland, so Irish visitors usually fly via Athens or London. Airlines change their schedules every season, so check the latest flights before you book. For ferries and other ways to reach the island, see our guide on how to get to Mykonos.

Inside the Terminal

Mykonos Airport has one small terminal. It is easy to find your way around, but it gets crowded on summer weekends when charter flights and scheduled flights arrive and leave in the same few hours. Here is what you will find inside.

FacilityWhat to expect
Airport loungeThere is a small lounge, but access depends on your airline and ticket, so check before you rely on it
Food and drinkA small choice of cafés and snack bars, none open all night
ShopsDuty free and a few shops for snacks, drinks and gifts
MoneyATMs and a currency exchange desk
WifiFree wifi on the network called Fraport Free
FamiliesBaby care room and free luggage trolleys
Luggage storageThere is no left luggage service at the airport, but several shops in Mykonos Town will store bags for the day
SleepingNo quiet areas or rest zones, and the terminal is not suitable for an overnight stay

Mykonos Airport Arrivals: What to Expect

  1. Leaving the planeThere are no jet bridges, so you walk across the apron or take a short bus ride to the terminal. Hold on to your hat, as the wind across the runway can be strong in summer.
  2. Passport controlFlights from the UK and other non Schengen countries go through passport checks, which can be slow when several flights land close together.
  3. Baggage reclaimThe reclaim hall is small, so it can feel crowded on busy days.
  4. Arrivals hallTransfer drivers wait here with name signs, alongside the car hire desks and the currency exchange.
  5. Outside the terminalThe KTEL bus stop and the taxi rank are just outside the exit. If the taxi queue is long and your hotel is in Mykonos Town, the hourly bus is often the faster option.

You can check live Mykonos Airport arrivals and departures on the official airport website run by Fraport Greece, or in your airline’s app.

Mykonos Airport Departures: How Early to Arrive

Check in desks, security and passport control at Mykonos Airport all get busy in July and August, and the departure area fills up quickly. Aim to arrive 2 hours before an international flight in summer, and about 90 minutes before at other times of year or for a flight to Athens with hand luggage only.

  • Book your taxi or transfer to the airport at least a day ahead in summer.
  • If you are taking the bus from Fabrika, catch one that leaves at least 2 hours and 30 minutes before your flight in case it is full.
  • Keep your passport handy for exit checks on flights to the UK.
  • On very windy days, check your flight status before leaving your hotel, as strong crosswinds occasionally cause delays at this short, exposed runway.

Mykonos Airport to the Ferry Port

Most big ferries from Athens, Santorini, Paros, Naxos and Tinos use the New Port at Tourlos, about 3 km north of Mykonos Town. In summer there is a direct KTEL bus from the airport to the New Port, timed roughly every hour during the day. A taxi between the airport and the New Port costs about 20 euros. Some smaller boats, and the boats to Delos, leave from the Old Port on the northern side of town, which is a short walk from Fabrika bus station. Allow at least 2 hours between landing and a ferry departure, and check which port your boat uses on your ticket. Our Mykonos to Delos ferry guide and the other Cyclades ferry guides list routes and times.

For villas, beach hotels, late arrivals or any trip in July and August, book a transfer before you fly and you will be at your hotel while others are still queuing at the rank. Before you pack, have a look at our Mykonos weather guide, as the summer wind makes a light jacket worth bringing even in August.
