Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and the one island that feels like it does not need tourism to survive. Ermoupoli is a proper working town with neoclassical mansions, a marble square, shipyards, and a year round population that gives the island a character you will not find on the more tourist driven islands. The beaches here are part of that same story. They are not over developed, not crowded, and several of them have a local feel that bigger islands lost years ago.
The best swimming beaches sit on the west and south coasts, sheltered from the meltemi wind that blows hard across the Aegean in July and August. The east coast is more exposed and rockier, though it has a couple of coves worth exploring on calmer days. Galissas on the west coast is the main beach resort, and Vari on the south coast is the other popular base for beach holidays.

Which Syros Beach Suits You
The main beach with the most going on: Galissas Beach is the most popular beach on Syros. A wide sandy bay on the west coast with sunbeds, tavernas, and a village right behind the sand. The water is shallow and calm, and the bus from Ermoupoli stops here regularly.
Families with young children: Agathopes Beach on the south coast has some of the shallowest, calmest water on the island. The sand is fine, there are a few tamarisk trees for shade, and the beach has been awarded a Blue Flag. It is a short drive from Vari.
A sheltered bay with a fishing village feel: Kini Beach on the west coast sits in front of a small fishing village with waterfront tavernas. The bay is calm, the sand is golden, and the sunset views from the taverna tables are some of the best on the island.
Something remote and quiet: Delphini Beach is a short walk north from Galissas along a coastal path. It is unorganised, sandy, and quiet enough that you will often have it to yourself even in August.
Close to Ermoupoli for a quick swim: Asteria Beach is the nearest swimming spot to the capital, walkable from the town centre. It is small and not the island’s most scenic beach, but it is convenient for a morning dip before exploring the town.
A proper south coast beach day: Megas Gialos Beach is a long, sandy bay on the south coast with calm water, a handful of tavernas, and a relaxed atmosphere. It never feels crowded and the swimming is excellent.
Near a traditional village: Finikas Beach sits next to a small harbour village on the southwest coast. The beach is sandy with shallow water, and the village has enough tavernas and cafes to keep you fed all day without moving.

Planning Your Beach Days on Syros
Buses run from Ermoupoli to Galissas, Vari, Finikas, and Megas Gialos during summer, covering the main west and south coast beaches. Kini and Delphini are also served but less frequently. A hire car or scooter makes exploring the quieter beaches easier, and the Syros taxi page has local numbers.
