Is Klima worth visiting

Klima packs a great deal into a very small space. Its waterfront is lined with syrmata, traditional two level boathouses where fishermen once stored their boats on the ground floor and lived above, each door painted a different colour so families could spot their own home from the water. Behind the village, the hillside holds the remains of ancient Milos, including a Hellenistic theatre and the site where the Aphrodite of Milos was found in 1820. It suits travellers who want a short, memorable stop combining striking colour with real archaeology, best visited slowly rather than rushed.

A port that predates the modern village

Klima’s history stretches back far further than its picturesque boathouses suggest. The site was first settled around 1100 BC after the destruction of the earlier settlement at Fylakopi, and it grew into the main port of ancient Milos, thriving as a trading centre between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. That prosperity ended in 416 BC, when Athenian forces invaded and sacked the city during the Peloponnesian War. Centuries later, in 1820, a farmer working a field near the village uncovered the statue now known as the Aphrodite of Milos, or Venus de Milo, which has stood in the Louvre in Paris ever since. The Ancient Theatre above the village and the nearby Catacombs are the clearest surviving links to that earlier city.

Getting to Klima

From Plaka: Klima is about 4 kilometres away, around 10 minutes by taxi or car, or a walkable route on foot for those who enjoy hiking.

From Adamas: Around 6 kilometres, roughly 15 minutes by taxi or car.

To the Ancient Theatre: About a 10 minute drive, or a steep 30 minute walk on foot for confident walkers.

Where to eat

Astakas is the standout choice in Klima, an outdoor seafood taverna serving fish brought in by local fishermen up to three times a day, with tables looking straight out over the boathouses. It fills quickly in peak season, so arriving early or booking ahead is worth doing, especially for a sunset table.

Where to stay
