Ammos Beach is the main beach of Koufonissi and it truly deserves its special status on this beautiful island. The beach is wide and sandy, perfect for those who love walking barefoot on soft sand without discomfort. The sand here is fine and light coloured, creating that postcard perfect setting you dream about when planning a Greek holiday. The water is so incredibly blue and clear that many first time visitors cannot believe their eyes when they arrive from the ferry port.

This is very much a family beach and you will see lots of parents with children spending their days here. The water is shallow and stays shallow for quite a long distance, which means young children can safely wade and play in the water without parents having constant worry. The beach has a gentle slope which makes it ideal for families with small kids who need time to get comfortable in the sea.

When it comes to crowds, Ammos Beach is busiest during August and the peak summer months from June through August. If you visit in May or October, you will find it much quieter and more relaxed. Outside of summer season, you might have whole stretches of beach to yourself. Most visitors are families and tourists from other islands, though many locals do come here too.

The beach is not a nudist area and there is a strong family atmosphere. This is the main public beach of Koufonissi town, so clothing is definitely required and expected. The atmosphere is very much family friendly and safe for children.

For visitors with disabilities, Ammos Beach has excellent facilities. There is a Seatrac system installed at the beach which provides free wheelchair accessible entry into the sea. The Seatrac is an automated system powered by solar energy that features a seat attached to a rail that gently lowers disabled visitors into the water to approximately 60 centimetres depth. This is a wonderful facility and means everyone can enjoy the beach and the sea regardless of mobility challenges.

2. Water Quality And Conditions

The water at Ammos Beach is absolutely stunning. The transparency and clarity is exceptional, making it perfect for snorkeling and underwater photography. You can see down to significant depths without any difficulty, and the colour is a vibrant turquoise blue that photographs beautifully.

Water temperature is best from June through September when the sea ranges from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius, which is approximately 73 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. August is the warmest month at around 25 to 26 degrees Celsius. May and October are cooler but still very swimmable at around 19 to 21 degrees Celsius. From November through March the water drops significantly and many visitors find it too cold for comfortable swimming.

The beach is well protected from the Meltemi wind, which is the strong dry northerly wind that blows across the Aegean during summer. This protection means the water at Ammos Beach stays much calmer than at exposed beaches on other islands. You will find the water quite peaceful and gentle here even when other areas are experiencing strong winds and rough conditions.

Water entry is easy with no rocks or obstacles to navigate. The seabed is sandy throughout the shallow zone, so your feet are comfortable as you walk in. The water deepens very gradually, giving everyone time to adjust to deeper water at their own pace. There are no particular hazards and the swimming conditions are ideal for all ability levels.

3. Accessibility And Getting There

Ammos Beach is situated right next to the ferry port of Koufonissi, which makes it incredibly convenient for visitors. The beach is literally just a 5 minute walk from where the ferry boats arrive, making it perhaps the most accessible beach on the island. If you are staying in the town of Chora, you can walk to Ammos Beach in under 10 minutes. The distances are very short and straightforward.

There is no driving to reach this beach if you are staying in town. You simply walk from your accommodation or from the ferry port directly to the beach. There is no parking needed as everything is within walking distance. However, if you have rented a car, there is parking available near the beach area.

The paths and roads in Koufonissi are fairly flat with only slight inclines. Walking to Ammos Beach is easy and suitable for anyone with reasonable mobility. The town itself is compact and not spread out, so everything feels close and accessible.

Getting to Koufonissi island itself requires taking a ferry boat, as the island is not connected by bridge or causeway to any other island. Ferry boats run regularly during summer months from Naxos and Paros. The ferry journey from Naxos takes approximately one hour. Ferry prices are typically affordable, usually in the range of 3 to 5 euros per person.

Once you arrive at Koufonissi port, you are immediately in town and the walk to Ammos Beach takes just a few minutes. No difficult hikes or boat transfers are needed. This is one of the easiest to access beaches on Koufonissi.

4. Facilities And Amenities

Ammos Beach and the surrounding town area have excellent facilities. There are several cafes and restaurants right near the beach, all within easy walking distance. Lefteris Seaside Restaurant is located directly at the beach and offers complimentary sunbeds and umbrellas if you order from their menu. This is a great option for families who want shade without paying extra for sunbed rentals.

Other nearby restaurants include Lavanda e Rosmarino for Italian food, Rastoni Koufonissia for Mediterranean cuisine, Armira Kai Pioto for traditional Greek seafood, and Souvlaki Sti Strofi for casual quick meals. Most restaurants offer reasonable prices and fresh local seafood. Main courses typically range from 10 to 20 euros depending on what you order and which restaurant you choose.

Unlike some other beaches on the island, Ammos Beach does not have commercial sunbed and umbrella rentals operated by beach vendors. However, Lefteris Seaside Hotel and bar does offer free sunbeds if you purchase food or drinks from them. You can also bring your own umbrella, and there are tamarisk trees along the upper part of the beach that provide some natural shade, though they are not extensive.

There are toilet facilities at the beach area. Fresh water is available near the restaurants and cafes. The beach is clean and well maintained. There are no showers directly on the sand, but facilities are available in the nearby town area.

The atmosphere is one of relaxed freedom rather than resort style luxury. You will not find water sports rentals or other commercial activities here. The focus is on swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the beauty of the sea and surroundings.

5. Activities And Special Features

The water clarity makes snorkeling absolutely worthwhile at Ammos Beach. You can see fish and marine life clearly from the shore. The shallow water means you can snorkel safely even if you are not a strong swimmer. The sandy bottom and lack of rocks make it comfortable to enter and exit the water.

Boat activity in the bay adds to the charm of the beach. You will see fishing boats bobbing in the water and small vessels coming and going. This creates a very authentic Greek island atmosphere. The boats are part of the scenery and add character to the beach. Just be aware that boats do create small waves occasionally, so do not place items too close to the waterline.

The surrounding town is within walking distance, so you can easily take breaks from the beach to explore shops, cafes, and the local area. Many people enjoy a beach day that includes some exploration of the town during the hottest hours of the afternoon.

The views from Ammos Beach are beautiful, with mountains visible in the distance and white washed buildings of the town creating a picturesque backdrop. Photography here is rewarding and you will take many beautiful pictures without much effort.

6. Practical Information

The best time to visit Ammos Beach is early morning if you want fewer crowds and a more peaceful experience. Even during high summer, arriving early ensures you have more of the beach to yourself. Late afternoon is also quieter as some visitors have left for dinner.

Bring plenty of sunscreen as the Greek sun is intense and burns very quickly, especially during June through August. Even on overcast days the UV rays are strong. A good hat or cap is essential. Sunglasses are recommended. Bring water to stay hydrated throughout the day, as dehydration happens quickly in the heat.

You can wear sandals or water shoes, though many people go barefoot on this sandy beach. The sand is fine and not hot to walk on. There are no sharp rocks or shells, so bare feet are comfortable here.

Bring a beach towel and consider bringing your own umbrella as shade is limited. If you do not bring an umbrella, plan to move around the beach to follow natural shade from the tamarisk trees, or use the free sunbeds at Lefteris Seaside Restaurant if you order food.

Food and drinks are reasonably priced at the nearby restaurants. You can have a substantial meal for 10 to 15 euros at most establishments. Soft drinks cost around 2 to 3 euros. Coffee typically costs 2 to 3 euros depending on what you order.

7. Safety And Warnings

The beach is very safe and there are no particular hazards. Water conditions are calm and suitable for all swimmers. The sandy beach and gentle slope make entry easy and comfortable. There are no underwater rocks or obstacles.

The sun here is intense during summer months. Even if you think you will not burn, the Greek sun is deceptively strong. Apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day. Wear a hat and reapply sunscreen after swimming. Sunburn can develop quickly without proper protection.

The beach is not protected from the sun, so shade is important. If you plan to stay all day, bring an umbrella or plan to use the sunbeds at the restaurant. Some people find the exposed sun too intense for full day visits during peak summer heat.

Be aware that boats in the bay occasionally pass very close to shore, especially larger vessels. Avoid swimming too far out into the boat traffic area. Keep an eye on where boats are anchored and where they travel.

There is very minimal current and no dangerous wave conditions. The beach is suitable for swimmers of all abilities including children, elderly people, and anyone with limited swimming experience.

8. Special Attractions And Nearby Points Of Interest

The ferry port itself is interesting to watch with boats arriving and departing throughout the day. If you enjoy observing boat traffic and maritime activity, the beach offers excellent views of all the comings and goings.

The town of Chora is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the beach and features traditional whitewashed buildings with blue doors and shutters typical of Greek islands. There are local shops selling gifts, clothes, and beach items. Several cafes and tavernas offer opportunities to explore local cuisine beyond what is available at the beach.

The coastal walking path from Ammos Beach heading east takes you past several other beautiful beaches. You can walk to Finikas Beach in about 25 minutes, continuing past other coves like Fanos and eventually reaching Pori Beach in around 45 minutes to one hour. This makes for a wonderful afternoon of beach hopping.

Koufonissi is part of the Cyclades islands group and day trips to nearby islands like Naxos and Paros are possible. However, these require taking the ferry from Koufonissi port.

The island itself is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle, and you can walk around the entire island in approximately 3 hours if you enjoy hiking. Several inland trails offer scenic walks through the island interior.

Sunset watching from Ammos Beach or from the nearby restaurants is a popular evening activity. The sunsets here are beautiful and many visitors make a point of being at the beach during the golden hour before sunset.
