Beach composition
Aegiali Main Beach features soft golden sand that covers the entire length of the shore and extends well into the water. You can walk barefoot comfortably here without needing protective shoes because there are very few pebbles or rocks. The sand is fine and pleasant for sitting directly on a towel if you prefer not to rent a sunbed.

Crowd levels
This is one of the most popular spots on Amorgos so it can get quite busy during July and August. However the beach is very long and forms a large horseshoe shape so there is usually plenty of space for everyone. You will see a mix of local Greek families and international visitors enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

Family friendliness
Families love this beach because it is very safe for children to play in the sand and swim. The water is shallow near the edge which allows young ones to paddle safely while parents watch from nearby. The soft sand is perfect for building castles and there is a playground right next to the beach for when kids want a break from the sea.

Nudism policy
Aegiali Main Beach is a family friendly area where visitors keep their swimwear on at all times. If you prefer clothing optional swimming you can walk twenty minutes to the nearby Levrossos Beach where nudism is accepted.

Disability access
This is the most accessible beach on Amorgos for visitors with mobility issues. It features a specialized SeaTrac system that helps wheelchair users enter the water independently. There is also a wooden pathway, designated parking, and adapted restroom facilities to ensure everyone can enjoy the seaside.

Water Quality & Conditions

Water temperature
The sea is lovely and warm during the peak summer months. You can expect water temperatures between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius from June to September which is perfect for swimming. August offers the warmest water at around 26 degrees while May and October are refreshing but still swimmable.

Water clarity
The water here is beautifully clear and transparent which makes it easy to see the sandy bottom as you swim. It has a stunning turquoise colour that looks inviting and clean.

Underwater features
The sandy bottom slopes gently into deeper water without any sudden drops or hidden rocks. There are no major underwater caves right at the main beach but the clear visibility allows you to see small fish swimming in the shallows.

Wind conditions
Aegiali is a protected bay so it often stays calmer than other parts of the island when the Meltemi wind blows from the north. However strong winds can sometimes kick up sand on the beach itself.

Safety
This is considered one of the safest beaches on Amorgos for swimming because there are rarely large waves or strong currents. The easy entry into the water makes it suitable for swimmers of all abilities.

Accessibility & Getting There

Transportation methods
You can reach the beach easily by car or by using the local bus service that stops right at the port. Many visitors staying in Aegiali village simply walk down to the water as it is just a few steps away from most hotels and rooms.

Parking
There is a large public parking area right behind the beach which is free for everyone to use. It is very convenient because you do not have to walk far with your beach bags.

Difficulty level
Getting to the beach is very easy and requires no hiking or climbing. The flat terrain makes it simple for anyone to access the sand from the parking lot or the village promenade.

Boat schedules
Small taxi boats depart regularly from the pier on the left side of the beach to take people to nearby coves like Levrossos and Psili Ammos. These trips usually cost around 5 euros per person and run frequently throughout the day in summer.

Road conditions
The road leading to Aegiali is paved and in good condition so you will have a smooth drive if you come from Chora or Katapola.

Facilities & Amenities

Food & drink options
You will find many excellent choices for food and drink lining the back of the beach. Popular places like Koralli Taverna serve delicious Greek meals while beach bars offer cold coffees and snacks. The famous tavern called The Port of Mrs Katina is located just behind the beach and is well known for its traditional dishes.

Sunbeds & umbrellas
There are several organized sections where you can rent comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas for the day. A set typically costs between 10 and 15 euros but prices can vary depending on the season.

Shade options
If you do not want to rent an umbrella you can find natural shade under the large tamarisk trees that grow along the back of the beach. These trees provide cool relief from the hot sun and are free for anyone to sit under.

Toilets & changing
There are public toilet facilities available near the playground and parking area. Many of the beach bars and tavernas also have restrooms for their customers to use.

Fresh water
You will find showers located at various points along the beach to rinse off the salt water after your swim.

Activities & Special Features

Snorkeling opportunities
The clear water makes snorkeling fun especially near the rocky edges of the bay where you might see more marine life. It is a great place for beginners to practice because the water is so calm.

Underwater caves
There are no caves at the main beach itself. You would need to take a boat trip or visit a dive center to explore caves further out in the bay.

Diving options
The Amorgos Diving Center is located right here on Aegiali Beach. They offer courses for beginners and guided dives for experienced divers who want to explore the deeper waters and shipwrecks nearby.

Hiking trails
Aegiali is a major hub for hiking and several beautiful paths start from here. You can walk up to the mountain villages of Tholaria and Langada which offer incredible views looking back down over the bay.

Photography
The sunset at Aegiali is spectacular and offers a perfect opportunity for photos. The view of the sun dipping behind the mountains across the bay creates a magical golden light that photographers love.

Practical Information

Best time to visit
The morning hours are wonderful for calm water and a peaceful atmosphere. Late afternoon is also lovely as the sun is less intense and the beach bars become lively with people enjoying the sunset.

What to bring
You should bring high protection sunscreen and a hat because the Greek sun is very strong. A bottle of water is always a good idea although you can easily buy drinks nearby.

Footwear requirements
You can walk barefoot on the sand but simple flip flops are useful for the hot sand at midday or for walking to the tavernas.

Crowdedness patterns
The area right in front of the beach bars tends to be the busiest part of the beach. If you prefer more quiet you can walk towards the far end of the beach near the camping area where there are usually fewer people.

Food & drink costs
Prices are generally reasonable with a coffee costing around 3 to 4 euros and a full meal at a taverna costing between 15 and 25 euros per person.

Safety & Warnings

Sun exposure
The sun can be extremely hot in the middle of the day so it is important to seek shade regularly. Do not underestimate the strength of the UV rays even on windy days.

Water entry
Entering the water is very easy on the soft sand but always watch where you step. It is rare to find sharp objects but looking out for the occasional pebble is wise.

Meltemi wind impacts
While the bay is protected the northerly Meltemi wind can still blow sand across the beach which can be annoying. On very windy days you might prefer to sit at a taverna rather than lie on the sand.

Wave conditions
Large waves are rare here which makes it excellent for relaxing swimming. The water usually stays flat and calm which is why families like it so much.

Rocky terrain
There is no difficult rocky terrain to worry about at this beach. The ground is flat and sandy throughout the main area.

Nudism acceptability
Please keep your swimwear on at this beach out of respect for the local families and general rules. Nudism is not practiced here.

Special Attractions & Nearby Points of Interest

Movie filming locations
Amorgos is famous for the movie The Big Blue and you can feel that diving culture here. While the main scenes were filmed at Agia Anna you can visit the Amorgos Diving Center on this beach to learn more about the underwater world shown in the film.

Historic cultural sites
From the beach you can see the white villages of Tholaria and Langada high in the hills. These traditional settlements are full of history and old churches like Agia Triada which was built on an ancient tower.

Shipwrecks
The famous shipwreck of the Olympia is not visible from this beach but it is a short drive away to the south. Many people visit it as part of a day trip around the island.

Nearby villages
The port village of Aegiali itself is charming with many shops and alleys to explore. You can also hike or drive up to Langada and Tholaria to enjoy authentic village life and great food.

Day trip combinations
You can take a small boat from the port to the island of Nikouria which you can see across the water. It has lovely untouched beaches and makes for a wonderful day out.
