Times vary with the boat and the number of island stops on the way, so always check the exact sailing when you book. Our Cyclades ferry guide has every route in detail.

Athens to Santorini

Santorini is the furthest of the popular islands from Athens. High speed ferries from Piraeus take about 5 hours, and conventional ferries between 6 and 11 hours 30 minutes, arriving at Athinios port below Fira. Because the ferry is so long, many visitors fly instead. The flight takes about 45 minutes and lands at Santorini Airport, 5 km from Fira. See our Athens to Santorini ferry guide.

Athens to Mykonos

Mykonos is one of the easiest islands to reach by sea. The quickest option is a high speed ferry from Rafina, which can take as little as 1 hour 50 minutes, while Piraeus ferries take from about 2 hours 40 minutes on a fast boat to nearly 6 hours on a conventional one. Flights take about 40 minutes. See our Athens to Mykonos ferry guide.

Athens to Paros and Naxos

Paros and Naxos sit next to each other in the middle of the Cyclades, and most ferries stop at both. From Piraeus, Paros takes from 2 hours 45 minutes and Naxos from 3 hours 20 minutes on a high speed ferry, or about 4 to 5 hours 30 minutes on a conventional one. Rafina has daily summer sailings to both. Read our guides to the Athens to Paros ferry and the Athens to Naxos ferry.

Athens to Milos

Milos is in the western Cyclades, and ferries from Piraeus usually call at Kythnos, Serifos or Sifnos on the way. The fastest boats take about 2 hours 35 minutes to Adamas. The 40 minute flight to Milos Airport is a good option when the sea is rough. See our Milos and Piraeus ferry guide.

Central Athens to Piraeus

From the centre of Athens, the easiest way to Piraeus is the metro. Ferries to the Cyclades usually leave from gates E6 to E10, so check your gate and allow time to walk or take the free shuttle bus that runs along the port.

Tips for Taking the Ferry From Athens

  1. Book early in summer. Popular sailings to Santorini, Mykonos and Paros sell out in July and August, especially the high speed boats.
  2. Check the port on your ticket. Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio are an hour or more apart, so a mix up can mean a missed boat.
  3. Arrive at least 1 hour early at Piraeus. The port is huge, and the gate for your ferry can be a long walk from the metro.
  4. Pick a big ferry if you get seasick. The summer meltemi wind makes high speed catamarans bumpy, while large conventional ferries barely move.
  5. Leave a spare day before your flight home. Strong winds can cancel sailings, so do not plan to catch an international flight on the same day as your ferry back.
